Priming Pays Off!

Zinnser Universal Wallpaper PrimerGinny wrote me recently about her PaperIllusion experience:

My daughter and I hung our first roll (purchased locally) without realizing that we should have used sizing to prep our wall. It has some buckles and wrinkles as a result. It only covered half of my wall.

When your roll arrived and you stressed the importance of prepping your wall with sizing, I had to call my mom and ask what it was. Using it made a huge difference! Huge! So lesson well learned…

So my tip(s): …ALWAYS, ALWAYS use sizing under your paper, PERIOD! No exceptions!

While the instructions that come with the product state priming your walls is a necessary preparatory step, we’ve found the manufacturer does not always include directions with every box. So, we started not only sending a copy of instructions with every order of PaperIllusion at Wallpaper Illusions, we also include a letter from me stressing the importance of this step.

Why is this so important?

  • Applying a primer creates a vapor barrier making it easier for the paper to adhere to the wall. While there’s an adhesive/paste on the back of the paper, if you apply it to an unprimed surface, the water will seep into the pores of the surface and the paper will fall right off.
  • When applying a primer first and the time comes to removing the paper, it will be a piece of cake; just moisten the product until it’s good and wet and it will peel off without any problem at all.

Wallpaper Primer is not that expensive. Believe me, you’ll end up spending a lot more money trying to fix the problem later. ;)
